Equality
Treating people equally. People shouldn’t experience discrimination on the basis of who they are/where they are born/their beliefs/if they have a disability.
Every individual should have an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives.
Diversity
Recognising and respecting individual differences.
Promotes inclusion and giving people equal opportunity.
Discrimination
When a person is treated differently on the basis of a personal characteristic like race or gender.
It can be direct or indirect discrimination.
Indirect discrimination occurs when a person is discriminated against as a result of organisational policies and practices.

Advocate
Someone who speaks on behalf of an individual who is unable to speak up for themselves
Advocacy services/organisations
SEAP, Mencap, Empower Me and The British Institute of Learning Disabilities
How an advocate can support an individual
Going with the individual to meetings/attending for them
Helping an individual finding and accessing information
Writing letters on behalf of the individual
Speaking on behalf of the individual at a case conference to express their wishes
An advocate will:
Be completely independent and represent the individual’s views
Ensure an individual’s rights and needs are recognised
Represent an individual’s wishes and views
Speak on behalf of an individual who can’t speak for themselves
Act in the best interests of the person they are representing
An advocate will not:
Judge the individual
Give their own personal opinion
Make decisions for the individual
Support groups
Mind, Age UK, Headway, Macmillan Cancer Support
They aim to empower and support individual’s with illness/long term conditions/disabilities
Informal support and examples
Care given by those not paid to do so and aren’t professionally trained. E.g. friends, family, neighbours.
Things they could do: Shopping Preparing meals Collecting prescriptions Cleaning Laundry Personal care - bathing, getting dressed, showering
