What do we mean by media sector?
The main means of mass communication that is distinct from others.

What is a conglomerate company?
This is a large organisation made up of a number of different businesses. One parent company will own all the smaller companies called subsidiaries which all run independently but support wider goals.
Give an example of a media conglomerate?
Walt Disney company (Marvel, ABC TV)
What is an independent company?
Companies that are free from the control of a conglomerate. They usually specialise in producing one type of media or service.
What is a joint venture?
This is when a media company works with another company on a project that is mutually beneficial for both parties.
What is a public service broadcaster?
This is a company that services beneficial to the public interest.
Give 3 examples of a public service broadcaster.
- BBC
- ITV
- Channel 4
What is cross-media?
A conglomerate that produces more than one type of media.
Define marketing?
The action of promoting and selling products or services including market research and advertising.
Define promotion.
The publicising of a product, organisation or venture to increase awareness or sales.
What is vertical integration?
This is where a media company has the ability to control the production and in some cases the exchange of a product.
What is horizontal integration?
This is when a media company utilises the assets of its subsidiary companies to support the marketing process of a major product or brand.
Commonly used by conglomerates as they don’t control the production process.
What is synergy?
- The increased efficiency and profit that occurs as a result of horizontal and vertical integration.

Give an example of horizontal integration.
The film sky fall was distributed. T Sony pictures on behalf of a British film company called Eon productions.
