70% deciduous woodland, mostly beech - including grasslands and marshes

Home to a rich variety of wildlife including all 3 native species of woodpecker, wood boring stag beetles and fallow deer
What were the early uses of Epping forest?
Kings and queens used it to hunt deer
Local people would graze their animals and collect wood for fires and building
(Since Norman times)

Pollarding - where trees are cut at shoulder height to encourage new growth -> sustainable management
1878 - Epping forest act of parliament: ‘conservators shall at all times keep Epping forest when closed and unbuilt on as an open space for the recreation and enjoyment of people

1600 ha designated as a site of special scientific interest and a European special area of conservation
