Living and non-living things Flashcards
What is MRS GREN?
The seven characteristics of a living thing.
What are the 2 groups of Non-living things?
- Never part of a living things
- Once was a part of a living thing
1. eg. rock, gold 2. eg. paper, jam, fallen leaves
What does MRS GREN stand for?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
What does the M in MRS GREN stand for?
With Definition
**Movement. ** All living things have internal movement . Some have external movement.
Internal: Can move substances from one part of the body to another
What does the R’s in MRS GREN stand for?
With Definition
Respiration. Living organisms must be able to do the process of burning up food to obtain energy.
Reproduction. All living things produce young.
Reproduction eg. eggs, seeds that germinate, babies
What does the S in MRS GREN stand for?
Sensitivity. Living things react to changes around them.
Eg. light, hot and cold, touch, sound, etc
What does the G in MRS GREN stand for?
Growth. When living things feed they gain energy. Some of this energy is used to grow. Living things usually become larger and more complicated as they grow.
Eg. tadpoles to a frog
What does the E in MRS GREN stand for?
Excretion. Is the removal of waste from the body. All living things need to remove waste from their bodies.
Eg. Breathing out, urinating
What does the N in MRS GREN stand for?
Nutrition. All living things must be able to obtain food in order to grow and repair tissues.
Eg. Herbivores eat vegetables, plants do photosynthesis
How many of the characteristics does an object have to have to be considered a living thing?
All seven.
It has to show all 7 other wise it is NOT a living thing.
What are the differences between Non-living and Dead?
Dead - once alive; shows some cellular structure; showed MRS GREN when alive; showed a response to stimulous when alive; followed lifecycle.
Non-living - never alive; doesn’t show cellular structure; Never produce or use food; growth if present is due to external factors; cannot move on their own; no response to change; life cycle doesn’t exist.
