LIVES Level 4 Oxygen PMA Flashcards
Oxygen Therapy Prescription Medicine Authorisation, for LIVES Level 4
Oxygen Therapy Inclusion Criteria (Child)
Significant illness
Significant injury
Oxygen Therapy Inclusion Criteria (Adult)
Critical illness requiring high levels of supplemental oxygen
Serious illness requiring moderate levels of supplemental oxygen if the patient is hypoxaemic
COPD and other conditions requiring controlled or low-dose oxygen therapy
Conditions for which the patient should be monitored but oxygen therapy is not required unless the patient is hypoxaemic.
Oxygen Therapy
Exclusion Criteria
Paraquat poisoning (unless < 85%) Explosive environments
Oxygen Therapy
Cautions
Oxygen increases the fire hazard at the scene
Defibrillation of the patient is a spark-hazard, ensure pads are well-fitted and oxygen source removed prior to defibrillation
Care should be taken for patients with a hypoxic drive
COPD should be assumed in a > 50 y/o patient that is a long-term smoker or ex-smoker with a Hx of longstanding breathlessness of minor exertion, in the absence of a Hx of asthma
Aim for 88% - 92% unless critical
Oxygen Therapy
Monitoring Requirements

Sats < 85%
Oxygen Therapy
Adult Dose and Delivery Devices for Serious Illness,
Example Serious Illnesses (7), Hypoxaemic SaO2
Require supplemental oxygen if the patient is hypoxaemic (target sats = 94 - 98%)
Asthma (? Bronchodilator Tx) Heart Failure Pulmonary Embolism Pneumonia Pneumothorax Severe Anaemia Hypoxaemia of Unknown Cause
Titrate O2 as appropriate
Simple face mask (5-10 L/min)
Nasal cannulae (2-6 L/min)
