Liver Structure Flashcards
Liver cells are called….
Hepatocytes
Key adaptations of hepatocytes
Many mitochondria
Large nuclei
Prominent Golgi body - lots of enzymes to make
Microvilli for high SA
Lobes of liver
Hepatic lobules
Structure of hepatic lobules
Roughly hexagonal
Contain hepatic portal vein hepatic artery central vein bile duct and Kupffer cells
Function of hpv and ha
Bring blood into the lobules travel via sinusoid to the central vein surrounded by hepatocytes
Function of Kupffer cells
Act as macrophages ingest foreign particles
Break down RBCs into protein chains and haem group
Then convert haem group into a substance called bilirubin
Function of hepatocytes
Take up bilirubin and secrete into the bile in spaces called the caniculi
Function of bile caniculus
Drain bilirubin and other products into the bile ductules
Then taken to the hall bladder for storage
Vessels into/out of liver
Oxygenated delivered via hepatic artery
Deoxygenated delivered via hepatic vein
Products of digestion from intestines brought from hepatic portal vein
