Kidney Failure Treatment Flashcards
Treatments
Haemodialysis
Peritoneal dialysis
Transplant
Haemodialysis
Blood flows through machine and back into body
Separated to dialysis fluid by partially permeable membrane
Blood flow opposite to fluid
Steep conc gradient
Dialysis fluid
Contains glucose water and mineral ions
Normal plasma levels of glucose to ensure no movement of glucose out of the blood
Normal plasma levels of mineral ions so restore electrolyte balance
No urea - steep conc gradient
Peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneum natural dialysis membrane
Usually done at home
Using catheter left for hours urea moves out into dialysis fluid
Drained off and discarded
Transplant
Put heathy kidney inside body placed in groin connected to vessels and bladder
Transplant problems
Risk of rejection can result in destruction of kidney
Major surgery is risky
Don’t last forever 9-10 yrs
Immunosuppressants
Reduce risk of rejection
Stop response to infectious diseases
Take care not to get ill
Disadvantages to dialysis
Expensive
Inconvenient
Feel unwell between sessions
