LIVER OVERVIEW Flashcards
The major organ of Metabolism
Liver
All major pathways take place here
Liver
Glucose will be utilized by what tissue of the Liver?
Peripheral tissue
The major pathways concerned with the metabolism of glucose
Glycolysis
Gluconeogenesis
Glycogenolysis
Major pathways in the liver
Glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis,
β-oxidation, citric acid cycle, ketogenesis,
lipoprotein metabolism, drug metabolism
(CYP450),
synthesis of bile salts, urea, uric
acid,
cholesterol, plasma proteins
Main substrates in Liver metabolism
Nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA or free fatty
acids),
amino acids,
alcohol
lactate,
glycerol,
glucose (in fed state),
fructose,
Major products exported in the liver
Glucose, triacylglycerol in VLDL, ketone
bodies, urea, uric acid, bile salts,
cholesterol, plasma proteins
Special enzymes involved in metabolism in the liver
Glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase,
glycerol kinase, phosphoenolpyruvate
carboxykinase, fructokinase, arginase,
HMG-CoA synthase, HMG-CoA lyase,
alcohol dehydrogenase
These cannot be used by the liver, hence will be transported to other organs needing it the most
Ketone bodies
This is an integral enzyme for carbohydrate metabolism found in the liver
Glucokinase
