Liver Function Tests Flashcards
what are transaminases?
hepatic enzymes that are usually intracellular, but are released from hepatocytes in context of hepatocellular injury
where is alanine aminotransferase (ALT) located?
cytosol-located in the liver
where is aspartate aminotransferase (AST) located?
in cytosol and mitochondria, present in liver, heart, pancreas, skeletal muscle, brain. lungs, RBCs and WBCs
what is the half life of ALT?
47hours
what is the half life of AST?
17hours
when might aminotransferases be increased?
in hepatocellular pathologies
what are alkaline phosphatase?
enzymes that catalyse the hydrolysis of a number of organic phosphate esters
what is the half life of alkaline phosphatase?
1 week
what is the origin of alkaline phosphatase?
biliary cholestasis enhances synthesis and release of ALP bone placenta intestine kidney
what is bilirubin?
a breakdown product of heme, transported to liver bound to albumin, uptake into the hepatocytes, undergoes conjuction, exctered via urine/feaces
what does prothrombin time (PT) measure?
conversion time from PT > thrombin and thus reflects a vital component of the liver
what may elevated PT reflect?
reduced synthetic functionality
what are other causes of PT prolongation?
drugs
bile malabsorption causing vit K deficiency
consumptive coagulopathies
congenital coagulopathy
