Liver and Gall Bladder Patterns Flashcards
Liver Qi Stagnation
Causes:
• Emotional disharmony, especially repressed anger, resentment, and/or frustration over a long period of time, which impairs the circulation of the Liver Qi
Stagnation of Liver Qi over a long time induces stasis of Liver Blood
Liver Qi Stagnation
Symptoms:
- Distention and pain in the chest and hypochondriac region, also on the areas coursed by the Liver channels
- Frequent sighing, depression, moodiness, melancholy, unhappiness
- Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, reduced appetite, sour reflux, belching, abdominal distention, loose stools, plum pit syndrome
- Irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, premenstrual breat tenderness, PMS

Liver Blood Stagnation
Causes:
Emotions such as long term frustration, repressed anger, and resentment, all impede the circulation of Qi (and Blood)
Liver Blood Stagnation
Symptoms:
- Dysmenorrhea, irregular periods, dark and clotted menstrual blood
- Fixed and stabbing abdominal pain, abdominal masses fixed, not moveable
- Epistaxis or vomiting of blood

Liver Fire Blazing
Causes:
- Long standing state of anger, repressed anger or frustration which causes Qi to stagnate and form heat
- Excessive consumption of alcohol, fried foods, meat also tends to cause Liver heat. Especially meats such as beef and lamb, which are attributed to hotter energy
Liver Fire Blazing
Symptoms:
- Red face and eyes
- Irritability, angry outbursts
- Tinnitus, deafness
- Temporal headache or migraine
- Dizziness
- Thirst
- Bitter taste in mouth

Damp-heat in the Liver and Gallbladder
Causes:
Internal:
• Spleen Deficiency: irregular eating habits, excessive consumption of cold and raw foods, protein deficient diet, excessive thinking or mental strain. Liver Qi stagnation over a long time causes Liver Heat which combines with dampness to obstruct the Liver and Gallbladder
External
• Invasion of exogenous Damp-heat- common in tropics, less common in temperate climates
Damp-heat in the Liver and Gallbladder
Symptoms:
- Fever
- Bitter taste
- Presence of heat
- Scanty dark urine
- Fullness or pain of the chest and hypochondrium
- Jaundice
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
- Abdominal distention
- Vaginal discharge, vaginal itching
- Pain, redness, swelling of scrotum

Cold Stagnation in the Liver Channel
Causes:
• Caused by invasion of the Liver channel by Cold. Liver channel transverses external genitals; cold contracts, causing pain and contraction
Cold Stagnation in the Liver Channel
Symptoms:
- Fullness or distention of the hypogastric region
- Pain in the scrotum/testes, straining of testes or contraction of scrotum
- In women can cause severe dysmenorrhea which is relieved by heat
