Liveable communities Flashcards
Five features that help distinguish between rural and urban environments
Rule is more old-fashioned and farming. Urban is more modern and city like. Urban areas are much more developed. Rural areas are much less developed. Rule areas have a low population and urban areas have a high population. They’re also hire densities of people in urban areas. There are lower densities of people and rule areas population densities are measured it per kilometre squared for example. Rural areas have less pollution in traffic urban areas have more pollution and traffic
six unique urban land uses
Residential, transportation, commercial, industrial, institutional and public buildings, open space.
Factors that affect the pattern of how land is used
Relief, economic, social.
Find central business district
A central business district is the commercial district and business centre in large cities it is also the financial centre it is usually located in the oldest part of the city near the transportation routes
Liveability
Liveability is all the characteristics that contribute to the communities quality of life
Identify and explain the factors that improves the liveability of places
Housing affordability job opportunities infrastructure reasonable government education healthcare transportation how the air clean water green spaces and social opportunities.
Walk ability
It is how friendly to walking a neighbourhood is.
Why is walk ability important to urban design
Walk ability has health benefits, economic benefits and saves costs on transportation methods, it improves liveability and decreases pollution.
What is the workability effect liveability
Like ability affects the environment, it is a good social outlet makes things more affordable increases healthiness
Difference between liveability and sustainability
They both want to improve the quality of life but sustainability focusses on a resource management
Urban sprawl
Uncontrolled expansion of the urban area into the rule area. Traffic congestion loss of agricultural land puts pressure on the environment loss of animal habitat a decrease in the walkability
Explain the purpose of the Ontario Greenbelt
The purpose of the Ontario Greenbelt is to protect the areas around the GTA, its purpose is to protect those sensitive areas from urban sprawl.
compact model of urban growth
It focusses on turning low density buildings into high density buildings. It turns vacant lots into housing. It turns all buildings into new buildings and brings them back to life
Examine too detailed examples that illustrate possible ways to rethink the way we build
One example is building public transport near high density areas to make it easier for people to get around. Another example is making a more walkable neighbourhood for having nearby commercial buildings and education
Examine too detailed examples that illustrate possible ways to rethink the way we move
Having residential areas near public transit for example having a subway stop near high density building/commercial building to better way we move is you build your high density residential areas like the big tall buildings where people live apartment buildings in condos you build it really really close even on top of subway stops so it’s convenient for people to use public transit another way of rethinking the way we move is by building extensive bike lanes
Where and what is cabbage town
It is a neighbourhood in central Toronto
Outline the Garden City planting principles of Regent Park
All of the buildings faced in words toward the guard green space. The Regent Park house is faced away from the city and there are no commercial buildings or recreational facilities. There are not many roads so if you didn’t leave in Regent Park you didn’t really have a reason to go there. This created a lot of isolation for the 7500 residence
Why is Regent Park an example of that urban planning
Region park is isolated because is turned away from the city it is also bad because there are no recreational facilities so most of the time people wouldn’t have anything to do and they would get in trouble mostly children because there are no business people had to go elsewhere to work
What happened to Regent Park in the 70s 80s and
In the 70s immigrants came to Regent Park from the Caribbean, south east Asia and China. The majority of people living there were immigrants in the neighbourhood ELD more than 70 different languages making it difficult for people to communicate. That lead to people leaving region park and because there are so many different cultures it led to many conflicts. In the 1970s because of the lack of recreational facilities use were bored and there is a lot of poverty that led to a lot of conflict in the 1990s and 1980s pick up progress to drugs
Atlanta region park
In the early 2000’s the government started to read vitalize Regent Park they tore down old buildings and built new high-rises, Lo rises and made rises and town houses. I also build community centres roads commercial buildings and parks. They also makes a new type of community before the revitalization of Regent Park it was mostly low income people in the neighbourhood so basically the government is trying to fix all the previous problems with Regent Park
What is the Regent Park revitalization a game
Before the revitalization of region Parker was isolated from the city after the revitalization it is more a part of the city involved with the city. Because they’re less low income people in the neighborhood it is becoming safer because the crime rate is kind of down lastly it is no more vibrant neighborhood because it has commercial buildings and recreational facilities
Three ways why the revitalization has been problematic
Relocation issues, cost issues, social issues.
