Anthony Burgess’ Clockwork Orange

A

Within the novel, the anti-hero protagonist, Alex characterized as not only a being of pure psychopathy , but as one who takes pride in these psychopath behaviors. Inventlblely attack of elderly woman lands him in the state prison –> However, soon taken in to an alternate punishment sentence, one that entials Alex to be forced to watch gruseome and distrubing videos ranging from war footage and images of sexual assault. By the end of the session, he no longer feels the compulsion to enact on these corrupt actions, but it’s not out of realization;epiphany/understanding of the harm of his actions –> psycholoigical control; as if possessed by the video footage he’s seen –> he’s unable to feel the feelings he desires —> goes as far as to end up trying to commit —> In fact, it’s not until the end of the novel in which Alex himself wants to persuit a change of character that he can actually transform into a citizen of rectitude and moral consciousness/empathy/ moral complex

-Overcoming hardships only builds character when individual shows an desire to overcome them.
-True change can only come from within/ true change can only occur if the individual shows desire to
-Dangers of ripping identity
- moral question: what’s worse; is controlling bheavior more inhumane even if this bheavior is inhumane –> No; not affective; goal is to rehabiliate not create more jaded –> becomes a sheer vessel–> as a result, if anything this only covers the problemed indiual under a luxiorious sheet rather than actually put in the effort to rectify their persona/traits

Franz Kafka’s Metamorphasis

A

-Gregor spontaneously turned into a bug –> acted as his familiy’s one source of income –> as a result of his gruesome transformation which rendered him unable to work –> became a burden to the family –> faced severe abuse and neglect from family –> became the punching back/ scapegoat of all family’s issues –> isn’t until his morose death until the family is able to feel free of his curse

Dangers of capitalism –> although a fictional tale, Metamorphasis encapsulates the very real human nature that is intertiwned with the capitalist mindset –> so hungry over the sound of –> unable to see how destructive it is to the family –> viscious cycle of unrelasitc expectations —> American Dream –> break bonds after being so blinded by this supposed stair case to heavenly glory of economic prosperity

Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure

A

Within the text, the low-class level protagonist Jude, constantly holds this adoration of a neighboring village called Chrisminiter, viewing it as a place of intelluctual promise and scholarly endeavors. In fact, as a younger boy, Jude had practiced Greek and religioius studies to prepare himself for his future mission of being a student at one of the Chrisminister universities. However, upon eventually moving to this province, he is only met with dissapointment, as he fails to be able to attend any of the universities he had been so enlivened by
-dangers of idealism
-unfairness of class distinction –> less oppourtunities
-Struggles of hardwork not paying off
-Hope and idealism leading to dissapointment
