What is Diction?
The careful selection of words to communicate a message or establish a particular voice or writing style
What is formal diction?
The use of sophisticated language, without the use of slang or colloquialisms. Usually sticks to grammatical rules and uses complicated syntax
What is informal diction?
Informal diction is more conversational and used most often in conversational literature. The use of less formal communication is to represent how people communicate in real life.
What is pedantic diction?
This is used when the author is highly detailed or academic in their writing. The rods the author uses are used to convey only one meaning.
What is Colloquial diction?
Colloquial words or expressions are informal and generally represent a certain region or time. EX. “ain’t” “Yall”
What is slang diction?
Words that originated within a specific culture or subgroup but have since gained traction. Slang is usually an entirely new word or an abbreviated one
What is poetic diction?
Diction that is driven by lyrical words and relates to a specific theme reflected in a poem, and to create a euphonious, or harmonious, sound.
What is the difference between denotation and connotations?
Denotation in the dictionary or literal meaning, while connotation is the implied meaning.
