alliteration
repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words (philosophical fish)
anaphora
the repetition of a word of phrase at the beginning of multiple clauses or sentences
assonance
repetition of the similar vowel sounds (blue moon, funny tummy)
context
something outside the text that affects its meaning (historical context)
dialect words
a form of language spoken in a particular area or by a particular social group (dem)
direct adress
when a poem talks to the audience, targets someone
dramatic monologue
an imaginary speaker addressing an imaginary audience
end-stopping
when there is a pause at the end of a line (usually a full stop)
enjambment
when a sentence runs over from one line of verse into the next
extended metaphor
a version of a metaphor that extends over the course of multiple lines or stanzas of poems
free verse
a poem with no regular rhythm or like length
half-rhyme
words that almost rhyme but not quite
hyperbole
deliberate exaggeration for effect
iambic pentameter
a like or verse with five beats which fall on second syllable of each pair
imagery
language that describes something using at least one of the five senses
