Characterization
Author lets the reader know what the individuals story is like
Direct characterization
The author directly tells you about the character
Indirect characterization
The author shows what the character is like through thoughts,speech,action
Metaphor
Author makes comparisons using “like” or “as”
Simile
Makes comparisons but doesn’t use “like” or “as”
Personfication
Gives a non human thing human qualities
Foreshadows
hints or gives clue that suggest an action is about to happen
flashbacks
takes them to a point in their life
Irony
Contrasts between what is stated verse what it really mean
Juxtaposition
Author places a person,concept,place,or idea next to another basically comparing them
Mood
The atmosphere in the story
Repetition
recurrence of a word,phase,or sentence
Symbol
an object or thing that suggest something beyond itself
Theme
Theme is the moral or lesson of the story
Expanded Moment
The author explodes the scene with details
