Dramatic irony
occurs when what a character says/believes contradicts with what the audience knows to be true.
•When Happy says he wants someone with substance.
Situational irony
occurs when what takes place contrasts with what is expected or deemed appropriate.
•Happy not being happy
Verbal irony
occurs when what a character says contrasts with what they actually mean (sarcasm)
Pathos
Quality that arouses the readers pity/sympathy.
anti-hero
A protagonist of a drama/narrative who is notably lacking heroic qualities
Modern tragedy
1) main character isn’t of high noble standing
2) main character suffers from an internal flaw
3) flaw tends to lead to their downfall
4) main characters struggle evokes pathos
5) Patos leads to a catharsis
6) in the end good as wasted
7) heroes death doesn’t affect a wide spectrum -may even be unnoticed
protagonist
