Antecedent Action
the events that occur before the story takes place
Exposition
incidents occurring at the beginning of the story, introduces main characters, settings, & situations.
Character Foil
A character that serves by contrast to highlight or emphasize opposing traits in another character
Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement that adds emphasis without intending it to be true
“They should’ve arrested the builder for cutting those down! They massacred the neighborhood.” pg 16-17
Flashback
Presenting past events during current events, in order to provide background for the current narration.
Motivation
what drives a character to think, behave, & interact.
Realism
Portrayal of life in a faithful accurate manner; the everyday mundane & normal events of life
Stage directions
text in a play that is not spoken, but indicates action or activity for characters to engage in.
Foreshadow
A hint/clue given to suggest what will come in the future
