Assonance
the repetition of the sound of a vowel or diphthong in non-rhyming stressed syllables
Colloquial
used in ordinary or familiar conversation; not formal or literary
Aubade
a poem or piece of music appropriate to the dawn or early morning
Comic relief
episodes in a dramatic or literary work that offset more serious sections.
Ballad
a poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas.
Conceit
Excessive pride in oneself
Blank Verse
verse without rhyme
Connotation
an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning
Cacophony
a harsh discordant mixture of sounds
Consonance
agreement or compatibility between opinions or actions.
Carpe Diem
Living in the moment
Conventional Character
stereotypical and of not much value in a story
Catharsis
the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.
Couplet
two lines of verse, usually in the same meter and joined by rhyme
Chiasmus
a rhetorical or literary figure in which words are repeated in reverse order, in the same or a modified form.
