Imagery
the use of words or pictures to describe ideas or actions in poems, books, films etc
Purpose:
Increases interest through visualization or emphasize a theme
ex: Hospitality
Legend
A non-historical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularity accepted as historical
Ex: The Odyssey was once read as history
Metaphor
A figure of speech comparing two things that are not alike
ex: They are frequently embedded in verbs: “Nine years we wove a web of disaster”; “that made the rage of the monster boil over”; “his mind churning with thoughts of bloody work”; “Terror blanched their faces” (note the personification of terror). Odysseus is “fated to escape his noose of pain,” and when he finds himself near the land of the Laestrygonians, he places his ship “well clear of the harbors jaws.”
Personification
A figure of speech of an inanimate object
ex: Dawn [Framing Device]
Symbol
Something that stands for or suggests something else by reason of relationship, association, convention, or accidental resemblance especially a visible sign of something invisible
Ex: Eagle of Zeus, Lightning Bolt= Anger, a sign of approval, power
Alliteration
The repeating of a word at the beggining of a few words in a row Purpose: Catches Attention Ex: “…Run out of sng and speed sought after long ago.”
Allegory
A story painting in which the events and characteristics represent ideas or teach a moral lesson Ex: The heros journeyteaches us -to be imaginative - to uphold “good”
Epic
A piece of epic literature about the peoplel of a civilization and the community in their existance: Violent of values. The Odyssey the rythem/ meter of the epic poem is dactylic hexameter
Epithet
The term used to characterize a person or thing Purpose: differentiates and emphasis a certain quality about a person Ex: Palas Athena, Hermes the giant killer, Poseidon the earth shaker
Fable
A story about supernatural or extrordinary persons or incidents legends Ex: Odysseus Reutation
Foreshadowing
to show or say something will happen Ex: Back 17- testing of the suitors -Comments about with suitors dead
Genre
Epic poem -
A long narrative telling of hero’s deeds
Bildungdroman-
A story about the moral and physiological growth of the main character
