Dynamic character
Undergoes change over the course of the story
Setting
Time and place where the action occurs
Static character
Remains the same throughout the story
Round character
Mixture if good and bad qualities, strengths and weaknesses
Flat character
So simplified that the audience immediately knows him/her and how he/she feels
Protagonist
Main character who is faced with a problem
Antagonist
Person/force/idea that opposes the main character
Direct characterization
The author tells the reader what the character is like
Indirect characterization
Author shows what a character is like by describing the character’s appearance, thoughts and actions

Plot
What and how things happen in the story, outlines events that take place in order to move the story forward. Most plots center on conflict, which the characters struggle to resolve.
Plot structure
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution
Exposition
Introduces the characters, setting, and the conflict
Rising action
Series of events that occur as a result of central conflict (leads up to climax)
Climax
Turning point in the story; when you know how the conflict will be resolved
