Poor comprehension skills
Poor metalinguistic skills
Slower linguistic/overall information processing skills
What processes effect reading development?
Phonological Awareness: analyzing the sound structure of language
Orthographic Awareness: Written language- how letters are formed and combined

- Alphabet knowledge: names of letters
- Print and word awareness: how letters are formed

What are “Embedded Approaches” of literacy development
Fostered through high-quality daily literary experiences and interactions with print in meaningful activities.
Give examples of Embedded approaches
- Morning message boards with words to count and segment sounds to blend into words.
- Sorting tasks by rhyming.
- Identifying beginning sounds with themed activities…
- Book sharing followed by questions
What are “Explicit/Direct Approaches” of literacy development?
Direct instruction of discrete skills
Give examples of Explicit approaches
- Taught in small groups/classroom
- May be necessary for students with LD: specialized instruction in word retrieval
