When is the onset?
Prior to 30 months old
How prevalent is ASD? Which gender is more effected?
1 in 68 children has Autism. More prevalent in boys (1 in 42 boys versus 1 in 189 girls).
How is IQ effected in this group?
50% IQ below 50
25% IQ 50-70
25% above 70
Pragmatics
Decreased joint attention
Difficulty initiating/maintaining conversations
Limited communication functions overall
Difficulty matching language form and context
May perseverate/bring up inappropriate topics
Immediate/delayed echolalia
Routinized utterances
Few gestures, misinterprets gestures
Overuse of question form
Asocial, solitary monologues
Speaker/listener roles not well developed
Poor eye contact- may use peripheral vision
Semantics
Poor word finding
Underlying meaning of words not used as memory aid
Inappropriate answers to questions

Pronoun use/verb endings effected
Superficial, structured sentences with little attention to meaning
Overly dependent on word order
Phonology
Least effected aspect of language in general
Often disordered but varies with every child
Developmental order same as TD
Comprehension
Overall impairment, noticeable in conversation
Red Flag Milestones for ASD
No babbling by 12 months
No gestures by 12 months
No single words by 16 months
No 2 word spontaneous speech by 24 months
Loss of language or social skills at any age
