Syntax
The set of rules that determines the arrangement of words in a sentence
Quatrain
A stanza of four lines, especially one having alternate rhymes
Rhythm
Rhythm is the flow of sound
Iambic pentameter
a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (or stressed) syllable
Consonance
the recurrence of similar sounds, especially consonants, in close proximity
Paradox
A person or situation that have contradictory statements or qualities
Metaphor
A comparison between two things without using the words like or as
Irony
whenever a person says something or does something that departs from what they (or we) expect them to say or do.
Synecdoche
when the word for a part of something is used to refer to the whole thing, or less commonly, the word for a whole is used to refer to a part
Allusion
A reference to a well-known person, character, place, or event that a writer makes to deepen the reader’s understanding of their work
Alliteration
Same Sounding Consonant Sound
Sonnet
A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line
Meter
A combination of the number of beats and arrangement of stress and non-related stress variables in each line
Personification
Giving human like qualities to objects
Assonance
Repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds within words, phrases, or sentences.
