What is listening?
Purposefully focusing on what a speaker is saying with the object of understanding
When listening in class, what should you do before the class?
- Get your mind in the right space
- the objectives you seek to achieve from the class
- what information to look for
- establish why the class is important for you - Get yourself in the right space
- Place yourself in the front row
- Have eye contact with lecturer
- Avoid distractions
When listening in class, what should you do during the class?
- Ask questions
- Take notes diligently (use Cornell method)
When listening in class, what should you do after the class?
- Recite notes
- Summarize
- Reflect and review before next class
What is the Cornell method of note-taking?
It is a method of note taking developed in the 1950s by a professor at Cornell University.
What are the 5 R’s of the Cornell
method?
- Record
- Reduce
- Recite
- Reflect
- Review
What is Record?
- Writing down all the meaningful information legibly
- Use symbols, abbreviations and acronyms
What is Reduce? (Recall column)
Once lecture is over identify:
- key points
- main idea
- questions
- important vocabulary
What is Recite?
Try to recite all the information in your own words without looking
What is Reflect?
- Write a summary of the lesson
- Think about your opinions and ideas as you read
What is Review?
- Take time before the next lesson to go through your previous notes
- Skim over main ideas and details
What are types of note taking?
- Outline method
- Concept map or Mind map
- Cornell method
Why is note taking important?
- Encoding
- Facilitates learning
- Encourages you to think about the content and connect
- It becomes an external storage
- Your notes are valuable
- It helps for later review
- Useful for additional cognitive processing
What are the pros and cons of Outlining method?
Pros:
sequential, excellent study guide
Cons:
requires more thought, may not show relationships
What are the pros and cons of Mind maps?
Pros:
Stimulating
Breaks down complex topics
Cons:
May skip important information
Messy
