What is academic reading?
It is reading with a specific educational or academic purpose.
Why is academic reading important?
- It is required
- For research
- Helps to develop your thinking
- Increases your knowledge
How is academic reading different from other forms of reading?
Content is different:
- challenging
- complex ideas
- technical terms
- data and statistica
- dry style
How you read is different
- identify a purpose (acting probing recursive)

What is active reading?
A planned, deliberate set of strategies to engage with text based materials with the purpose of increasing your understanding
What is skimming?
It is quickly identifying the main ideas of a text
What is scanning?
It is searching for key words and ideas
What does skimming involve?
Reading:
The title
First paragraph
First sentence of each body paragraph
Conclusion
Looking at graphics
Why is skimming important?
- You can decide if the text is relevant ad prepare for a more detailed reading
- Since you have an overall impression your reading will be more meaningful
How do you scan?
You concentrate on finding a particular answer
You look for specific words, phrases, numbers etc
