Lipids (fats & oils) Flashcards
What elements to lipids contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
What is the ratio of elements in lipids like?
They have no simple ratio
What do lipids have very little of?
Oxygen
When are fats solid?
When are oils liquids?
Fats are lipids that are solid at room temperature (20 degrees celcius)
Oils are lipids that are liquid at room temperature.
What are the smallest lipids made up of?
The smallest lipids are made up of one molecule of glycerol linked to three fatty acid molecules
What is a triglyceride structure
One molecule of glycerol linked to three fatty acids molecules
What are sources of lipids
Butter, oils, margarine, cream, fried food
What is the structural role of lipids? 3
They are important food stores in plants and animals. One gram of lipid contains twice as much energy as a gram of carbohydrate.
Lipids combine with phosphorus to form phospholipids and with proteins to form lipoproteins. Both of these are important in the structure of cell membranes.
In animals, the stored lipids have secondary function like heat insulation and protection of organs.
What is the metabolic role of lipids?
Lipids can be broken down in respiration ro release energy
Define phospholipids
Phospholipids are fat-like substances in which one of the fatty acids is replaced by a phosphate group or had a phosphate group added to it
