Lipids are a diverse group of hydrophobic molecules Flashcards
Lipids include fats, waxes, oils, phospholipids, and steroids. What characteristic do all lipids share?
Hydrophobic – don’t dissolve in water
What are the building blocks of fats? Label them on this figure.
Triglyceride – 1 glycerol (gray), 3 fatty acid chains (orange)
FLAG
Why are many unsaturated fats liquid at room temperature?
They have one double bond which bends/kinks the fatty acid chain
What is a trans fat?
Making a solid saturated fat from adding hydrogen to unsaturated fat
Ex of trans fat
Ex: margarine
List 3 important functions of fats.
Long term storage of energy, cell membranes, insulation
Which of the two fatty acid chains in the figure with question 30 is unsaturated? Label it. How do you know it is unsaturated?
The one that kinks/bends – because it has a double bond which makes it bend
. What lipid is pictured below?
Steroid – 4 fused rings
What are other examples of steroids?
Cholesterol – stabilizes the cell membranes, hormones
