Lipids Flashcards
Name the 2 main groups of lipid:
Triglycerides and Phospholipids
What are triglycerides formed from?
One molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids
What is the name of the bond that is formed by what reaction between a fatty acid and glycerol?
An ester bond formed by a condensation reaction
What is a saturated fatty acid?
A carboxyl group bonded to a hydrocarbon chain where there are only single C-C bonds between carbon atoms.
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
A carboxyl group bonded to a hydrocarbon chain where between one or more carbon atoms there is a double C-C bond.
What are phospholipids made from?
A glycerol molecule, 2 fatty acids and a phosphate group
What are triglycerides mainly used for?
Energy stores because long hydrocarbon tails contain a lot of chemical energy
What are phospholipids used for?
Cell membranes
How would you conduct the emulsion test for lipids?
- Shake test substance withe ethanol for 1 min
- Pour solution into water
- Any lipid will show up as a milky emulsion.
Draw a glycerol molecule:
Glycerol molecule
Why do phospholipids cause a bilayer?
Because they have hydrophilic heads which face out into the water and hydrophobic tails which face in forming a bilayer.
