Lipids Flashcards
What is the function of lipids?
Waxes solid below 45°- water proofing outside layers (skin/leaves)
Energy stores- yields more energy than glucose
Heat insulator
Metabolic water
Protection
What do lipids consist of?
Glycerol
Fatty acids
Are lipids polar or nonpolar & why?
Non polar
No charge
What are the 3 groups of lipids?
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
Steroids
What bonds form when glycerol and fatty acids join through a condensation reaction?
Ester bonds
What is a triglyceride made up of?
3 fatty acids
Glycerol
What’s the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats?
Saturated fats lack double bonds
Saturated have higher melting lint tbsp unsaturated
Saturated fats =solid @ room temp
What is a phospholipid
?
A triglyceride with a fatty acid removed & replaced with a phosphate group
Is the phosphate group polar or non polar?
Polar
Is the phosphate groups hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Hydrophilic
Why is the phospholipid “confused”?
Tails is hydrophobic but phosphate group is hydrophilic
