Lipids Flashcards
What is a mono unsaturated fat
Contains a double C=C bond
What is the polyunsaturated fat
Contains many double C=C bonds
Triglyceride
Most common type of liquid
non-polar = insoluble in water
1 glycerol molecule
3 fatty acid molecules
Glycerol + fatty acid -> triglyceride + H2O
(Ester bonds)
What is a fatty acid
carboxylic acid groups (COOH) with a hydrocarbon tail
What are the roles of lipids
Plasma membrane- contributes to the flexibility of the membrane and transfers lipid soluble substances across them
Energy source-twice the amount of energy than carbohydrates when oxidised
Waterproofing-lipids are in soluble in water
Insulation-retains body heat
Protection-Cushions around the vital organs
What is the saturated fat
Single C-C bonds
