Lipids Flashcards
Lipids functions include?
carriers (electrons and substrates)
vitamin absorption
part of biological membranes
energy stores
What are simple lipids comprised of?
Glycerol backbone and fatty acids
What are the two types of Fatty acids?
1 Acetic acid (saturated)
2 Linoleic acid (unsaturated)
Compound Lipids are?
Esters of fatty acids containing non-lipid substances
Mono, Di and Triglycerides are?
Esters of glycerol and fatty acids
What is a Glycolipid?
2 alcohol groups of glycerol esterified and third is linked to a sugar residue
What are essential fatty acids needed for?
Membranes, lipid transport, enzymes and prostaglandins
What do Bile salts achieve?
Emulsify fats leaving the stomach (aids hydrolysis)
What are Bile salts known as?
Amphipaths
Where does digestion mostly occur and by what enzyme?
Small intestine and Pancreatic enzyme
4 distinct phases of lipid assimilation
- Emulsification (by bile salts)
- Hydrolysis
- Micelle formation
- Absorption
What is the difference with Ruminant ether digestion?
Presence of microbes
True or false? Your mums your cousins uncle?
True
True or false? Generally plant and marine oils are more highly unsaturated than mammalian fat
True
Where do long chain FA produced by lipolysis get absorbed?
Not in the ruminoreticulum but the duodenum
