Lipids Flashcards
what are lipids?
hydrophobic organic molecules
- do not have monomers and therefore not a polymer.
what are the 3 types of lipids discussed in this class?
- fats
- phospholipids
- steroids
what is a fat made up of?
fatty acid and glycerol
what is a fatty acid?
a long unbranched hydrocarbon chain with a carboxyl group at the end COOH.
fatty acids can…?
vary in the length and the number/location of double bonds they contain.
fatty acids can be?
unsaturated or saturated.
what are saturated fatty acids?
- have the maximum number of hydrogen atoms
- have no double bonds
what are unsaturated fatty acids?
- have one or more double bonds
what is glycerol?
glycerol is a 3 carbon molecule with a hydroxyl group on each carbon
fatty acids and glycerol link via?
a dehydration synthesis to form fats.
what is an ester bond?
an ester bond is a bond that forms between a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group
1,2,3 fatty acids
1 fatty acid: monoglyceride
2 fatty acids: diglyceride
3 fatty acids: triglyceride
what is the main function of fats?
storing energy and insulation.
what are phospholipids?
phospholipids are two fatty acids attached to a glycerol but they also have a phosphate group.
what is the structure of a phospholipid?
hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail.
