lipids Flashcards
what is the structure of a lipid?
1 glycerol molecule , 3 fatty acid tails
how can the structure of a fatty acid be written?
RCOOH
what are the two groups that are part of a fatty acid?
R group
carboxyl group (COOH)
what are ester bonds?
the bond formed between C-O-C in a lipid molecule
what is a trigylceride?
1 glycerol , 3 fatty acids
hydrophillic glycerol head
3 hydrophobic fatty acid tails
what does a mono unsaturated fatty acid have in it?
a double bond
it is unsaturated with hydrogen atoms
what does a poly-unsaturated fatty acid have in it?
2 or more double bonds
what is a phospholipid?
similar to a triglyceride, but a phosphate group replaces one of the fatty acid tails
there may be other groups attached to the phosphate group
what do these phospholipids form?
a phospholipid bilayer
do lipids affect the water potential of cells?
no , as they are large and non-polar so are insoluble in water
what parts of a phospholipid are there?
hydrophillic head
hydrophobic tail
what is the test for identifying the presence of lipids?
ethanol testo
outline the ethanol test?
add ethanol to the sample and shake
add water and shake gently
cloudy emulsion show the presence of lipids
