inorganic ions Flashcards
what is an irnorganic ions?
ions that do not contain carbon
what is the role of an IRON ion?
binds to oxygen
haemoglobin = 4 polypeptide chains that each contain 1 Fe2+
what is the role of a HYDROGEN ion?
determines the pH of a concentration (fewer h+ ions = higher pH)
conc of H+ is important for enzyme controlled reactions
what is the role of a SODIUM ion/?
transport of glucose and amino acids across cell surface membrane (CO-TRANSPORT)
transmission of nerve impulses
what is the role of a PHOSPHATE ion?
allows individual nucleotides to join up (for DNA,RNA,ATP)
phospholipids
what is the role of a CALCIUM ion?
helps regulate the transmission of nerve impulses from neurone to neurone
stimulates muscle contraction
regulates protein channels+membrane permeability
enzymes are activated by calcium ions
