Lipids 1 Flashcards
Name 4 lipid classes
- Phospholipids
- Fatty acids
- Steroids
- Glycolipids
What causes unsaturation of fatty acids?
C=C double bonds cause a kink in the chain, therefore more liquid
At how many carbons long can humans no longer produce double bonds?
Can’t produce bonds beyond carbon 9
Name two essential fatty acids
Linoleic and linolenic acid
What does linolenic acid produce?
Omega 3 FA’s, essential in lowering LDL.
What are bile salts?
Emulsifiers that allow enzymes to break down FA’s
What do lipids exist as in the blood?
Lipoproteins
Where does chylomicron transport FA’s to and from?
intestine to tissue (adipose)
VLDL
liver to tissue
LDL
cholesterol from tissue to cavities
HDL
tissue to liver for elimination
How is TAG digested?
- degraded to monacylglycerol and 2 FA’s by pancreatic lipase
- absorbed through mucous cells in the small intestine
What is steatorrhea and who is most susceptible?
excess fat in faeces causing foul smelling, floating faeces. CF sufferers
Removal of what organ reduces FA digestion?
Gall bladder - it produces bile
How are TAG stores used in response to hunger?
- Epinephrine released
- HSL phosphorylated
- HSL then releases FA’s from TAG
