Lipid Lowering Agents Flashcards
What is the MOA of cholesterol–synthesis inhibitors ?
Interferes with cholesterol synthesis
Inhibits hepatic HMG COA, reductase (enzyme), causes hepatocytes to synthesize more LDH receptors
–therefore more LDL is removed
What are cholesterol synthesis inhibitors used for ?
Primarily to lower LDL (dose dependent)
Also decreases VLDL, increases HDL
Side effects & nursing implications of cholesterol–synthesis inhibitors
Side effects:
Few GI, headaches, rash, muscle wasting, weakness
NI: check LFTs
Admin. In evening
Effects are seen in 2 weeks, full effects seen in 4 weeks
Examples of cholesterol–synthesis inhibitors
(Statins)
Lovastatin
Simvastatin
What is the most effective lipid lowering agent
Cholesterol– synthesis inhibitors
