Lipid and bilirubin Metabolism Flashcards
What is the structure of a lipid molecule?
A lipid molecule has two main parts:
Hydrophilic Head: Water-loving, usually a glycerol or phosphate group.
Hydrophobic Tails: Water-fearing, made of long fatty acid chains.
Saturated Lipids contain no carbon double bonds between the chain
Unsaturated lipids contain a cis double bond whereas trans contain a trans carbon double bond.
What is the structure of a triglyceride molecule?
3 fatty acid chains attached to a glycerol backbone.
What is a Lipoprotein?
A lipoprotein is a complex molecule made of lipids (fats) and proteins that helps transport lipids through the bloodstream. Since lipids are not water-soluble, they need proteins to move efficiently in the blood.
What are the different types of lipoproteins?
Chylomicrons: Transport dietary lipids from the intestines to tissues.
Very Low-Density Lipoproteins (VLDL): Carry triglycerides from the liver to tissues.
Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL): “Bad cholesterol” that delivers cholesterol to cells.
High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL): “Good cholesterol” that removes excess cholesterol from cells and arteries.
