Linkage Flashcards
What is linkage?
Linkage means that genes are located on the same chromosome
Why can it be said that linked genes do not show independent assortment?
As linked genes tend to be passed on together (forming a linkage group) to the next generation
What does it mean if alleles R and S are linked?
This means that these genes occupy different loci on the same chromosome
What is sex linkage?
Sex linkage means that a characteristic is controlled by a gene on a sex (or X) chromosome
What are the sex chromosomes in humans?
X and Y
Which sex chromosome is the largest?
X
Which sex chromosome carries the most amount of genes?
X
What can sex-linked characteristics also be called?
X-linked
What controls sex-linked characteristics?
Genes or alleles located on the X chromosome
Why is it said that mothers control sex-linked characteristics?
As females with the genotype XNXn can produce the gametes XN and Xn however the male can only provide the Y chromosome which determines the sex
Therefore the female provides the N which is dominant for sex-linked characteristic.
