Genetic crosses Flashcards
How are letters assigned to genes for the use of genetic crosses?
The first letter of the dominant trait is used e.g. B
The capital version is assigned to the dominant allele
The lower case version is assigned to the recessive allele
Where are alleles found on a chromosome?
Alleles are found at the same position/locus on similar chromosomes
What are alleles?
Alleles are different/alternative forms of the same gene
What is the locus of a gene?
The locus of a gene is its position on a chromosome
What is a dominant allele?
This is the allele that prevents the recessive allele from being expressed
What is a recessive allele?
This is the allele that is prevented from being expressed by a dominant allele
What happens when a dominant and a recessive allele occur together?
The dominant allele is expressed
What are genes?
Genes are the instruction to the cell that help to produce the phenotype
What produces a phenotype?
The interaction of the genes with the environment produces phenotypes
What is F1 progeny?
F1 progeny means the first generation of offspring
What is F1 short for?
First filial generation
What is another word for heterozygous?
Hybrid
