Lingual Artery Flashcards
Describe the origin of the lingual artery.
It arises from the ECA and may arise from a common stem with the facial artery opposite the tip of the greater horn of hyoid bone. Its course is divided by the hyoglossus muscle into 3 parts.
What divides the course of the lingual artery?
The hyoglossus muscle
Describe the first part of the lingual a.
It arises from the eca until the posterior border of the hyoglossus muscle and lying on the middle constrictor of the pharynx, it’s crossed by the hypoglossal nerve and gives the suprahyoid artery which runs on the lateral surface of the hyoglossus and along the upper border of the hyoid bone.
Describe the second part of the lingual a.
It passes deep to the hyoglossus muscle giving two dorsal lingual arteries which supply the back of the tongue and end in the palatine tonsils
Describe the third part of the lingual a.
The third part runs along the anterior border of the hyoglossus and is crossed by the lingual nerve and the submandibular duct and it gives a sublingual artery to supply the sublingual gland and then ends as the deep artery of tongue which supplies the anterior part of the tongue and which is separated from the mucosa of the lower surface of the tongue by the deep vein of the tongue
What are the branches of each part of the lingual artery?
1st: suprahyoid artery
2nd: two dorsal lingual arteries
3rd: deep artery of the tongue and sublingual artery.
What does the sublingual artery supply?
Sublingual gland, mylohyoid muscle and buccal and gingival mucosa.
It also gives a branch which pierces the mylohyoid muscle to anastomose with the submental artery.
