LING1109 - WEEK 3 (social network) notes Flashcards
social networks
members of a speech community are connected to each other in social networks which can be relatively ‘closed’ or ‘open’
open networks
a network whose members do not know the other members of the network. Open networks are said to be of ‘low density’
closed networks
networks of connections where ‘everyone knows everyone else’. Closed networks are said to be of ‘high density’.
multiplex networks
where individuals are linked in several ways
uniplex networks
individuals are connected through only one kind of business
‘vernacular’
a mode of speaking in variation from what is considered to be the ‘standard’ language, i.e. the language that have evolved for the business of government, trade, education, etc.
closed, dense, multiplex networks are
‘norm enforcing’, i.e. they reinforce the use of ‘vernacular speech (another term is ‘dialect’, which we explore in our module on language variation)’
