Lines & Leads Flashcards
What is an IV line?
- delivers fluid and medications into a peripheral vein
What are precautions for IV lines?
- keep the drip bag above the level of insertion
- avoid kinking the tube
- take BP elsewhere if possible
- notify nurse if area around insertion is red or swollen
What is a PICC line?
Peripherally inserted central catheter
- surgically inserted catheter inserted from UE vein to SVC
- used for long-term administration of medications
What are precautions for PICC line?
- avoid BP in this UE
- avoid axillary crutches
What is PCA?
Patient controlled analgesia
- electronically controlled pump that delivers IV pain meds when the pt presses a button
- system automatically stops providing medication at a set level to avoid overdose
How long does it take for PCA to work?
5 mins
What is a nasogastric tube?
inserted through the nasal passages to the stomach to remove the stomach contents (when attached to suction)
- printed with measurements that can help identify movement once placed
- often taped to nose
What are NG tube precautions?
- notify nurse if movement is noted
- often can be temporarily disconnected for mobility
What is a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy/jejunostomy tube?
provides a portal for long-term tube feeding
What are the precautions for a PEG tube?
- feedings paused 30 mins prior to supine activity
- do not place gait belt over tube or insertion point
- make sure the cap is tight
What is a Dobhoff tube?
inserted like a NG tube but used for short-term feeding
What are precautions for Dobhoff tube?
- feedings paused 30 mins prior to supine activity
What is oxygen low flow?
- nasal cannula
- face mask
- face tent
What are precautions for oxygen flow?
- if relocating o2 tubing, always check for flow with your finger before connecting
What is oxygen high flow?
- venturi mask
- nonrebreather
- bag valve mask (Ambu bag)
- salter labs nasal cannula
- optiflow
