Linear Kinematics 1 Flashcards
Give 4 examples of kinematics
position, velocity, acceleration, time (angular components)
What is kinematics?
The area of study that examines the spatial and temporal components of motion
What is kinetics?
The study of the causes of motion
What are 3 examples of kinetics?
Forces, torque, momentum, work
Compare qualitative and quantitative
Qualitative is the analysis/discussion without numbers (greater than, increase, decrease, etc…)
Quantitative is the analysis/discussion WITH numbers
What is whole body linear motion?
All points on the object travel the same distance in the same amount of time/orientation of object does not change
What are the 2 subtypes of whole body linear motion (translation)
Rectilinear- path is straight
Curvilinear- path is curved
Pure rotation vs general motion
Pure- axis of rotation is fixed
General- object goes through angular motion but the axis is not fixed
Vectors and examples
Has magnitude and direction
Position, velocity, acceleration, displacement, force, etc…
Scalars and examples
Only magnitude (no direction)
Mass, distance, speed, work, power, energy, etc…
Cartesian format
3i + 5j
Polar format
Use pythagorean theorem to find number. Use inverse tan to find degrees
5.83 @ 59 degrees
Use units for P, V, A
What does a line over the top of a vector mean
Average
Vectors should be multiplied using what type of product?
Cross
Scalars should be multiplied using what type of product?
Dot
How do you subtract a vector
Switch the direction and add it to the tail of the last one
What are the requirements for component vectors?
-Must be perpendicular
-Should have a hypotenuse
