Crosshatching
a series of lines (drawn in a woven like texture) that create volume and texture
Contour Line
Kind of like an outline, but tends to define not just the outside but indicates edges of the form (on the inside as well)
Impersonal Line
constant, uniform, “machine made”, hand of the artist is not visible. tends to remove emotion from the piece
Expressive Line
very personal and emotive. you can see the hand of the artist. width, colour and value of lines vary. line can stop, start, jump, break etc. captures the movement of your drawing tool across the page. does not need to be aggressive. a little more dynamic and interesting, not as structural as impersonal line
Implied Line
not a line that is physically drawn, but it is hinted towards therefor suggested. engaging for the viewer, and just as important as lines that are drawn.
Figure Ground Relationship
created the second you make a mark on your picture plane, relationship between the lines you draw and the medium you choose to draw on
Parallel Lines
reflect the horizon, very stable and safe
Diagonal Lines
show a sense of energy and motion
Vertical Lines
tend to stop our eye
Lines
artists number one tool
