Form and Texture Flashcards
Form
3 types: literal, abstract, semiotic
literal form
realistic, factual, truthful. trying to capture things in a realistic way.
literal = realistic, highly literal = photorealistic, hyperrealistic
benefits: you record every detail, you get a likeness of your image
drawbacks: not as expressive as abstract form
abstract form
usually an intentional simplification, may deliberately simplify to shift the viewers attention to a certain thing in the form (eg. one specific art fundamental or movement, mood or feeling etc.) - media can dictate simplification
semiotic
based on symbols, the use of symbols to communicate information (three parts of semiotic form) iconic, indexical, symbolic
iconic
looks exactly like what it represents, it does what it looks like (road signs, deer road signs)
indexical
Indexical: have common sense connection to their meaning (poison=skull and bones)
symbolic
must be learned. no logical connection to the idea they are trying to convey (eg dove for the holy spirit, our alphabet, hand gestures. there are different meanings for all different cultures)
motif
a single element or theme
pattern
a consistent recurring motif, has the ability to draw attention to the surface, embellishes the surface of an object, can unify other elements, brings our awareness to the surface of the paper and holds your eye directly on the picture plane rather than being able to move through the picture plane
stippleing
creation of a pattern simulating varying degrees of solidity or shading by using small dots
ways to create form on a picture plane
dots, lines, shapes and volumes
wheel of fortune
Vanata, reminding us of our own mortality. painted in literal form, semiotic form in the shape of symbolism. “enjoy youth, enjoy your beauty while you have it
visual weight
illusion of weight or mass on that figures care on a composition (picture plane), every mark you make on the page carries weight or mass. placement of lines on a plane indicates weight as well, lower down = more visual weight
texture
**the actual surface how light interacts with the surface how does light reflect off the surface?
ways to create
crosshatching, rubbing stippling
