Limb Disorders Flashcards
LE Amputation Causes
Congenital outnumbers acquired 2:1
Trauma: MVC, guns, burns, landmines (boys:girls 3:2)
Osteogenic sarcoma & Ewing’s sarcoma MC tumors
Infection: purpura fluminans from meningococcal septicemia (may be multilimb)
Classifying Congenital limb deficiency
Transverse def named at segment where limb terminates
Longitudinal def named for ones partially or totally affected & fraction missing
Fibular Longitudinal Deficiency
Fibular hemimelia
Most common
Manifests as valgus foot, short leg, unstable knee &/or unstable ankle
Transtibial Deficiency
MC than transfemoral
Longitudinal def of tibial
UE Amputations
60% congential
MC limb def is left transradial
Trauma: single limb 90% (boys:girls 3:2)
Osteogenic sarcoma & Ewing’s sarcoma MC tumors (highest incidence in 12-21 yo)
Amelia
Absence of limb
Hemimelia
Absence of half limb
Phocomelia
Flapper-like appendage attached to trunk
Acheiria
Missing hand
Adactylyl
Absent metacarpal or metatarsal
Aphanlangia
Absent finger or toe
Radial deficiency syndromes
Thrombocytopenia w/ absent radius synd
Fanconi (leukopenia)
Holt-Oram (congenital heart defects)
VACTERL (vertabral, anal atresia, cardiac, thracheosophageal fistula, renal, limb anomalies)
Vikke Procedure
Attaches toes to residual limb to create a pincher grip with the transferred big toe
No foot complication from procedure
Arhogryposis multiplex congenita
multiple congenital joint contractures
Amyoplasia
No muscle growth
Blount’s Disease
Progressive and excessive varus alignment and shortening of legs due to partial fusion of the medial portion of the proximal tibia
Club foot
Congenital deformity of the foot which includes equinus, varus adduction, rotational and cavus deformities
Ponseti method
Manipulative technique that corrects congenital club foot by gradually rotating the foot around the head of the talus over a period of weeks
Start 7-10 days after birth
