What is the presentation?
20mg/2ml OR 50mg/5mL; (both 1%) in a plastic ampoule
How does it work?
Local anaesthetic - Sodium Channel blocker
What is the onset?
1-2 minutes
What are the indications?
Local anaesthetic for: IV cannulation IO infusion Suturing Finger thoracostomy in the conscious patient
What are the contraindications?
Hypersensitivity
What are the precautions
Adverse drug reactions are rare when lignocaine is used as a local anaesthetic and is administered correctly.
What is the intradermal dose?
0.1mL
What is the intraosseous dose for an adult?
What is the dose for a small adult/large child?
What is the dose for a child?
Small child: 10mg in 1mL
Small adult/large child: 20mg in 2mL
Adult: 40mg in 4mL (2 ampoules)
May be repeated at a second site if needed.
What is the dose for finger thoracostomy
50mg in 5mL
What are the special considerations/side effects?
Tinnitus, dizziness, anxiety, confusion, perioral numbness
Cardiovascular effects: Bradycardia, hypotension, dysrhythmias
CNS effects
Respiratory depression
