Lightning Protection Systems Flashcards
Air Terminal
Uppermost point of a tree lightning protection system
Branch conductor
A conductor that connects and air terminal to a main conductor
Conductive
A material that is capable of conducting heat or electricity
Conductor
Material or object through which an electrical current can flow
Electric potential
Voltage or difference in electrical charge between two points in a circuit
Ground conductor
The portion of conductor cable that is below ground and connects the primary conductor to the ground rod(s) or plate(s)
Ground plate
A copper plate used to form a ground terminal in shallow soils
Ground rod
Metal rod used in grounding a lightning protection system
Ground terminal
The portion of a lightning protection system, including the ground conductor, ground rod, or ground plate, that is installed for the purpose of providing electrical contact to the earth
Main conductor
Primary conductor cable oof a tree lightning protection system; standard down conductor
Primary conductor
A copper cable that connects the primary air terminal and the ground. At the soil line, this conductor becomes the ground conductor
Sideflash
Phenomenon of a lightning strike leaving its current path and “jumping” to reach a better-grounded conductor
Step voltage
Voltage between two objects on the ground near an energized, grounded object
