What is hard lighting and what does it do?
It’s lighting that’s been created by a small light source and hasn’t been diffused. It creates harsh shadows and is very unflattering
Define side lighting and what it is used for
Light on one side of a subject creates mystery, connotes inner conflict
Define Front lighting
Eliminates shadows and creates a flatter image
Define back lighting
Light from behind a subject creates a silhouetted shape, it can also create a halo effect
Define top lighting what affect does it have on a character?
Light from above a subject. Darkness can fill the eye sockets creating a menacing look. Used in the godfather
Define under lighting and its effect
Light that comes from underneath a subject which can create huge shadow and have a distorting effect on the object or person
Define hight key and lowkey lighting
High key lighting is very bright
Lowkey is very dim
What is chiaroscuro?
An effect of contrasted light and dark ( good and evil)
What is hard lighting

Created from a larger light source and is usually diffused. It minimises shadows reduces detail/ texture and emphasises beauty
Why is colour used in film?
Different colours can connote different themes e.g. red = death blue = loneliness

The geometric relationship to key and fill light
