Editing Flashcards
What is continuity editing
Editing that goes unnoticed/ editing that makes you forget that it’s edited
What is a shot?
Uninterrupted number of frames
What is a frame?
A single image
What is a scene?
A number of shots edited together within one continuous space or place during one continuous moment in time
What is a sequence?
A series of related scenes that for some clear and logical reason hold together as a coherent whole
What are the 4 main transitions?
Cut - no temporal break
Fade in/out - to or from black
Dissolve - gradual transition from one image to the next
Wipe - Star Wars
What is an eye-line match?
Camera cuts and shows the audience what the character sees after a shot of the character looking at something
What is match on action
cuts from one shot to a closer shot in order to emphasize an action
What is shot reverse shot
Camera switches between characters while they talk e.g. “you are such a DICK!” “EVERYDAY I WAKE UP AND I HOPE YOURE DEAD!”
Cross cutting
Often used to show parallels. E.g. “no I’m not going to do that!” cut to them doing exactly what they said that they wouldn’t do
Reaction shot
Camera cuts to a characters reaction
Jump cut
Often seen in YouTube videos. The camera will cut and shoot and cut and it makes the video look choppy but will also show how distorted a characters life is
Elliptical editing
(Start of the barbie movie) something will fade and show something else
What is the 180° rule?
Once you’ve established to the spectator what the proxemics and where everyone is you’ve also established where the 180° line is. You cannot cross this line unless you show the camera moving and you have to keep it in the edit
